Lerwick is the only burgh and main port of the Shetland Islands in Scotland, found more than 160 km (100 miles) off the north coast of mainland Great Britain. As the principal freight port for Shetland, Lerwick plays a vital role in the islands' economic infrastructure.
Lerwick lies on the east coast of the Shetland Mainland. It was founded in the seventeenth century as a herring and white fish seaport, and still thrives as a fishing and ferry port. The harbour is also busy with vessels supporting the offshore oil industry.
The port of Lerwick is a modern port with excellent facilties serving a wide range of customers.
Ongoing investments in deeper channels and berths, and in stronger quays to accommodate the larger vessels, has facilitated the handling of freight, as well as vessels and cargoes in other sectors. At the crossroads of the Norts Sea and the north-east Atlantic is it Britain's most northerly commercial port.
Getting There By Road
Holmsgarth terminal is about 1 mile north of the town centre, opposite the Shetland Hotel. For vehicle drivers, all ports are clearly signed.
