Cairnryan is a small village overlooking Lochryan and is notable today for its large modern ferry port, which links Scotland with Larne ferry port in Northern Ireland. Cairnryan port has been of vital importance in maritime history.
The Port of Cairnryan, operated by P&O Irish Sea Ferries, is located on the northern edge of Loch Ryan in the south west of Scotland. Being closer by sea to Northern Ireland than Stranraer, the attractions of Cairnryan as a ferry port led to the building by P&O ferries of a roll-on roll-off terminus here in the 1970s, offering a shorter freight ferry crossing to Larne ferry port. P&O Irish Sea Ferries (P&O) has now formed a joint venture with Stena Line for the development and operation of the port facilities at Cairnryan, near Stranraer. The services though of the two ferry operators will continue to operate separately.
P&O Irish Sea Ferries offers the shortest and fastest ferry crossings from Ireland to Great Britain, with a choice of modern fast ferry and conventional ferries with excellent facilities and services for their freight customers. In addition, the new P&O freight terminal offers commercial drivers a one-stop freight only weighbridge and check-in facilities, designed to ensure minimum waiting times.
