Crete, the southernmost island in Europe and the largest island of Greece, lies at the southern end of the Aegean Sea. It has been inhabited continuously from the Neolitic period and was the location of the Minoan civilization (ca. 300-1400 BC), the first civilization in Europe. It is a link between Asia, Africa and Europe. The island is 260 km long and from west to east and varies in width from 60 km to only 12 km (in the region of Ierapetra). It covers an area of 8261 sq. km. It consists of four prefectures: Chania, Rethymnon, Heraklion and Lasithi. Heraklion is the capital of the island, as well as the capital of the Heraklion prefecture.
